Comité pour une Paix Juste au Proche Orient (CPJPO) street theatre in support of Palestinian prisoners in Luxemburg City June 1st 2013
Following the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967 up until now, more than 700,000 Palestinian men, women, and children have been arrested by Israel. To date, nearly 5,000 Palestinians are detained in Israeli prisons and interrogation centers. Of these, at least 220 are children, 45 younger than 16 years old and two former ministers and 14 MPs are behind bars. 178 are in “administrative detention”: arrested and detained indefinitely on the basis of secret information without charge or trial. Ali Jaradat, journalist-writer and political activist has been for over 700 days in administrative detention!
In 2013, several serious incidents have already occurred that dramatically illustrate the situation of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails: Arafat Jaradat, 30, died on February 23, 2013 of “cardiac arrest” after five days of interrogation, a few weeks later Missarah Abu Hamdieh, 64 suffering from cancer died in prison a victim of medical negligence.
British-Danish security firm G4S has been severely criticized for its operations in the occupied Palestinian territories and in prisons and detention centers in Israel, including those housing children and “administrative detainees” held without charge or trial.
